The Story of Old Kings Cottage

Old Kings Cottage

This historic cottage, built in 1780, radiates timeless charm and character, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and architectural details. For this design, our team aimed to create an interior that feels light and inviting while maintaining warmth and comfort. We focused on using natural materials and earthy colors to cultivate a harmonious and inviting atmosphere, ensuring the space feels both elevated and unpretentious.

The Dining Room

Upon entering Old Kings Cottage, you are welcomed by inviting living spaces, with this dining room serving as the heart of the home. Designed to highlight the original wide-plank hardwood floors and the client’s cherished heirloom dining table, this room captures a sense of family heritage. By incorporating statement lighting, locally crafted high-back armchairs, and showcasing her growing collection of artwork, the dining area has become a captivating focal point.

To complete the look, we styled the table with our Etched Old Fashion Glass, Rivo Decorative Bowls, and greenery from her garden.

The Living Room

With the main living area, we drew inspiration from the timeless Ralph Lauren aesthetic, blending rich, deeper tones with coastal blues and yellows. The addition of a textured jute rug provides the perfect finishing touch, enhancing the overall warmth and style of the space.

We believe that every design should feel unique and special. That's why we dedicate time to developing a personal aesthetic for each client, ensuring that every room reflects their individuality while remaining cohesive with the overall design.

The Primary Bedroom

Adjacent to the sitting room, you’ll find the Primary Bedroom. This cozy space features windows on every wall, making bed placement a challenge. To achieve a seamless design, our team designed this custom bed to fit perfectly in the seam of the window.

For our Full Service Clients, we design custom furniture that is locally made here in Massachusetts. To read more about our Full Service Design, click here

The Guest Room

Welcome to the Guest Bedroom - the epitome of a relaxed coastal experience. Here at Mackenzie & Co., we design all guest bedrooms as boutique hotel experiences. To accomplish this, we selected a statement bed with eclectic side lamps that maintain a timeless feel, and accessorized the dresser with all the essentials your guests would need.

We emphasize storytelling through styling—those small details that make a home feel lived-in. We love to incorporate personal touches and thoughtfully layer in vintage or antique finds to fill the space with character. In the Guest Bedroom, we achieved this by displaying vintage perfume bottles on our Maddie Round Tray, including engaging books like The Nature of Home, and adding a carafe for water, ensuring a welcoming and personalized atmosphere for guests.

The Sun Porch

As you exit the home to the back yard, you'll pass through the sun porch, which features an additional living and dining area. This is where our clients spend much of their time reading and enjoying each other’s company, so we maximized the space with a variety of seating options for comfort and relaxation.

To continue a bright and welcoming interior, we designed custom furnishings with textiles that tell a story and add personality to the room. One of our favorite features is the dining area, beautifully accented with custom furnishings: a locally made dining settee from Cape Cod and a stunning walnut oval dining table crafted in Boston.

Looking out the expansive windows, you can admire the client’s stunning gardens, filled with an array of our favorites—hydrangeas and vegetables. We styled the outdoor area with some of our beloved items from our Shoppe Garden Collection, including the Essential Garden Tool Set and a beautiful Copper Watering Can.

This project was thoughtfully designed to reflect both style and comfort. From the timeless charm of the main living area to the coastal appeal of the guest bedroom, every detail has been crafted to create a unique yet cohesive atmosphere. We believe that a home should tell a story, and we’re proud to have infused our expertise with the client’s vision in this project to create a truly authentic space. Thank you for joining us on this journey home for our clients—if you’re inspired to transform your own space, we’d love to help you make your design dreams a reality.
