Our Autumnal Aesthetic
With the autumn season at our doorstep, designers must be prepared with a fresh vision to embrace the season’s changes. We took the time to chat with our designers at Mackenzie & Co. about their vision, and invite you to join the conversation.
Designer Q & A
Q: What is inspiring your autumn aesthetic this year?
A: This year we are leaning into the equestrian aesthetic. Drawing from all the different elements such as, the stables, equipment, and even horses themselves. It provides a classic and timeless feeling that translates well into the season and our heritage based brand.
Q: What is your color pallet for the season?
A: This year is all about browns and camels. We are very inspired by the changes of nature, especially those reflected in the rich, deep tones of flora and fauna.
Q: How do you incorporate textures and different materials to evoke an autumnal feeling in your designs?
A: Here at Mackenzie & Co., we are known for only using natural materials, like wool, cashmere, and velvets. The reasoning behind this is not only its noticeable increase in quality or its luxurious texture, but also its clean-ability. A lot of our clients emphasis their need to be able to easily clean elements in their home, and natural materials are the perfect solution.
Q: What challenges do you face when designing for the autumn season, and how do you overcome them?
A: The main challenge here in New England, being a seasonal part of the country, is a lot of people lean into those deeper tones, and heavier materials, and they have a hard time transitioning out of that for the spring and summer. A way to combat this conundrum is essentially making sure your foundation pieces are neutral. Then you can layer and switch out other elements such as accent pillows, throw blankets, and other decor based on the season you’re in.
Q: What do you think will be the upcoming interior design trends for autumn?
A: In regards to what is trending, interior design relates heavily with fashion. Both sectors have recently leaned on deeper and richer tones in their their foundation pieces, more commonly referred to in the fashion word as a “capsule” pieces. However one thing that remains to stay constant is having a “pop” element. Whether that pop is a bright red pair of shoes in an outfit or a stunning paint color in a powder room, having one element that stands out to the rest is a time and true design trick to capture peoples attention and elevate a look.
