Branding Advice

The rebranding and rebuilding of our website has been a true labor of love. We’re so proud of how it turned out and are excited to share it with you! This has been a project that we’ve spent many months perfecting. So, we wanted to provide some insight and a few helpful tips.

First, determine your goals.

With social media heavily influencing the creative community, it’s easy to fall into the cycle of doing things because everyone else is doing them. It’s important to stay true to your roots and hone in on what sets you apart in your industry. For us, our new aesthetic was heavily influenced by our founder Angela Hamwey’s Scottish heritage.

The desire to rebrand focused less on “what” we are to “why” we are. At first glance, it’s easy to learn that we’re an interior design studio. But, we wanted our clients to better understand us. And that all starts with our story..

Second, tell your story.

Our story begins with our name, Mackenzie. A celebration of her Scottish heritage, the name Mackenzie pays homage to Angela’s family kinship and milieu that has greatly influenced her aesthetic point of view. Being that oftentimes her true home was far away, creating a real sense of home was how she evoked the essence of her most authentic self.

Passion as our fuel, we do what we do because we believe our designs will ignite a sense of fulfillment and well-being within our clients. With a distinctive European inspired lifestyle approach, we imbue the ease of living slowly, but with intention.

But how do we communicate this with our clients and audience? We worked closely with our graphic designer to create an all encompassing style guide to define the Mackenzie & Co. brand. The color palette, logotype, fonts were all heavily analyzed and designed with intent. Each piece working together to tell our story. After all, the details matter..

Third, make it personal.

We wanted a thoughtful mark that defined our brand and what’s more perfect than the thistle - the symbol of Scotland. However, it’s naturally rough and sharp texture needed to be softened up a bit to better suite the brand.

We felt strongly that each asset have meaning. To show allegiance to the Mackenzie clan, one version of the thistle includes the traditional crest.

It was also important to create various logotypes and logomarks to be used for marketing and collateral. We are excited to unveil and use each one as we find the perfect place and purpose for each.

Finally, commit to the process.

Our hearts were fully invested from the very beginning. We spent days and weeks poured over books looking for inspiration. We searched far and wide, from leading fashion retailers to small pottery studios, taking notes from each one. The voice of Mackenzie & Co. changed as we leaned into European spelling and vocabulary. It just felt right.

To streamline things further, we created and launched a retail shop during this process - our Mac & Co. Shoppe. We wanted to offer our clients and customers the full experience. It’s an extension of us and our brand. The intent being you can always have a piece of Mac & Co., even if you don’t work with us directly.

Just as we say to our own clients, this process must be savored and not rushed. We dedicated more time than we ever imagined we would, but we can truly say the end result was worth it. If you choose to embark on this unique design journey, good luck and enjoy the process!
